San Zaccaria is in the Sestiere of Castello (district nearby Saint Mark). The Church is dedicated to St. Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, whose body it supposedly contains (under the second altar on the right). It is a large edifice, located in the quiet Campo San Zaccaria, just off the waterfront to the south east of St. Mark’s basilica. This church is the home of some famous paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries including that of the Enthroned Madonna and Saints on the main altar piece by Giovanni Bellini. The interior is of the greatest interest as Gothic elements blend with the new Renaissance forms, resulting in a grand and solemnly elegant use of space.
