Special Features
This magnificent church was dedicated to St.Francis of Assisi and constructed in 1228 . Later on in 1326, it was enlarged. The presbytery was entirely reconstructed on powerful arches, that open onto a magnificent underground crypt built into the steep hillside. The new enlarged church was finished in 1475, but then, in 1482, the walls were raised to match the increased width of the renovated church. Francesco di Giorgio was most probably the architect entrusted with this latter project.
Two great frescoes of Ambrogio Lorenzetti are worth a look: The martyrdom of Franciscan Friars and St. Louis of Touluse and Pope Boniface VIII.
