Destination Weddings in Fregene

Fregene lies 40 kilometers west of Rome and is best explored with a bicycle once you get there. In the north side of Fregene is the Villaggio dei Pescatori, an old fishing village that now hosts some well known serve sea food restaurants.

The fame of Fregene dates back to the 1600s, when the land around it belonged to the Rospigliosi family. Pope Clement IX, a member of that wealthy Roman family, planted a large forest of stone pine trees along the shoreline to protect the land from the strong winds of the Mediterranean.

Mussolini had the surrounding swampland drained, and by the 1950's, beach clubs began sprouting up along the coast.

During  the 1960's and 70's Federico Fellini often vacationed in his villa at Fregene, along with his wife, actress Giulietta Masina. Filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini, novelist Alberto Moravia and the actor Marcello Mastroianni also came quite often.

In it’s golden age, Fregene, that had once been a simple fishing village, became an oasis for Italian intellectuals and Rome's fashionable crowd from Via Veneto.

Today Fellini, Pasolini and Mastroianni are all gone together with the gossip that came with them.
