Special Features of this Ancient Church in Valpolicella
This ancient church, one of the most fascinating architectures in the Verona province, was rebuilt in 1200, but its origins have been dated to the 7th and 8th centuries.
During that time the church emerged from the ruins of a Roman pagan temple. A few features from that era have been preserved: a Roman altar dedicated to the moon and the sun, five rounded pillars all different from one another and one architrave.
The high altar is now what was once the wonderful Longobard "Ciborium" dated 712.
One of the purest examples of the Romanesque style, with a bell tower, the structure has three apses eastern oriented and one western. The last one belongs to the ancient and primitive Christian church and probably was used also as a baptismal site. Now it’s the main entrance and features beautiful frescoes.
The ceiling is made of wooden trusses.
Steeped in history, this is a truly special place for a Catholic wedding in Italy!
