Special Features
This church is one of the most significant Romanesque churches in Tuscany and it has played an important role in the history of religion and architecture. The beautiful building rises in the middle of the countryside, mystically solemn and silent, surrounded by olive and cypress groves. The origins of this superb example of Romanesque architecture date back to 775 AD. Three naves divided by seven arches on square pillars, some of which are partially decorated with fifteenth century frescoes, define the interior. The apsidal area, in typical Lombard style, comprises a central apse with three windows and two lateral ones with just one window, smaller but in the same style. The church was listed as a monumental building in 1902.
