Like a miniature medieval citadel, the Abbey is enclosed by walls and comprises a small hamlet overlooking an enchanted valley.

The Abbey was founded in the 7th century and subsequently improved with additions through the centuries, reaching its apex during the reign of the Orsini family and the Italian Renaissance. The mixture of different architectures creates a unique masterpiece. A very impressive wedding ceremony location!

A great arch dominates the entrance of the Cathedral. The Romanesque portal is adorned with magnificent floral friezes and the recently restored façade is simply gorgeous. Entering the Cathedral you will find an enormous Renaissance hall with a view of the baptistery. The inside walls are richly ornamented.

Throughout the Abbey you can visit the ancient ruins dating from the 9th century among which some precious mosaics and a stunning richly carved Romanesque sarcophagus. The 16th century cloister is a delight and the ancient library still stores a magnificent collection of old books and literature.

The Abbey and Basilica are still very much in use. During Vespers the Benedictine monks sing heavenly Gregorian chants! Products from the artisan crafts still practiced by the monks like honey, jams, herbal teas, balms and herbal liquors can be purchased.
