Destination Weddings on Island of Procida

Located next to the famed islands of Ischia and Capri, the Island of Procida is lesser known, yet just as spectacular. The smallest and oldest island located in the Bay of Naples, Procida was formed by volcanic substance. Now, its picturesque land is filled with blooming gardens and aromatic citrus groves; a delightful location for a destination wedding. With its natural charm and appeal, it is easy to see why some well-known films have been shot in Procida.

This island of Procida is located at the northwest entrance to the Bay of Naples, in the region of Campania in southern Italy. It has an area of 1.45 square miles and its highest point is 250 feet above sea level. The only town, Procida, is located on the northeast, and a former castle now serves as the local prison. This jail was at one time the fortress of Giovanni da Procida. The island, which boasts a meek population of just more than 10,000, is a well-known fishing destination.

The southwest coast of the island of Procida consists of gorgeous sandy beaches and the yacht harbour Chiaiolella. A small island known as Vivara connects to Procida by a bridge. This area is a nature preserve filled with rare birds and exotic plants.

Procida is renowned for its Good Friday procession, an annual event that dates back to 1627.  During the celebration, depictions of Christ's suffering are simulated along the streets. As it continues the next morning, a mourning march, accompanied by trumpets, crosses and relics, proceeds through the main streets.

The local residents tend to discourage tourism, which is why only a few small hotels and private accommodation can be found.  The restaurants are located in the main town at the Marina Grande harbor. Couples who prefer small marriage celebrations stationed in remote, rustic surroundings will find the Island of Procida to be an ideal spot for their festivities.
