Italy Road Map Information

In order to travel by car independently in Italy, we suggest you buy a Michelin road map and guide for the country of Italy or you can use navigation by satellite.  

We will also give you a general orientation map.  Michelin road maps have state roads, country roads and highways clearly listed and they are the best maps of Italy.  You can purchase one for at a large bookstore at home or when you arrive in Italy.

Road travel  in Italy is quite different from the US.  In Italy, in order to get from one town to another you have to follow the names of the in between towns on your map and look for signs pointing to the intermediate towns along the way.  Often the road numbers are not indicated. 

Autostrada means Highway and they are indicated in green

SS or Superstrada are state roads and are in blue and typically longer but more panoramic roads.
