Gypsies in Italy
Remember what the word Gypsy sounds like – gipped or gypped – because that is what Gypsies will do to you if you are not very careful. Italian Gypsies are professional thieves and pick pockets trained from their earliest youth to steal with the least amount of effort.
In Italy Gypsies will tend to work in small family groups with no men present. Only small children and some women will gather near subway and bus stops and catch you when you least expect it. And they are very quick.
Your purse and wallet will be gone and you will never get them back.
Gypsies will never be able to take anything from you if you follow these instructions:
- Do not let them come near you and if at all possible move to another location way ahead of time.
- If they see you running away that is their signal to go after you because you are panicking and they operate best if you panic.
- If you cannot avoid them hold on to your purse or wallet with one hand and threaten them with your fist or to kick them
- Men should place their wallet in front pocket of their pants
- Women should hold their purse in such a fashion that it is around their neck or shoulder in a diagonal fashion
- No one should be distracted by the Gypsies when they approach you banging a piece of cardboard
- Do not go near Gypsies and be on your guard if they are nearby
By the way the police will not do anything to help you if they or someone else picks your pockets in the subway
