Apostille
What is an Apostill and why is it necessary?
An Apostille is a seal placed by the Secretary of State’s Notary Public of the US State from which the document originally is from. It is a way to give a common US document international validity .
An APOSTILLE is simply the seal of the Secretary of State Notary Public of the state in accordance with the Hague Convention, which means that the documents can be used officially in another foreign country.
It is not a regular Notary Public stamp. Italian law requires an Apostille for wedding in Italy.
The process of obtaining and Apostille is done via regular mail, you simply call your Secretary of State’s Notary Public to find out the mailing address and forward your certificates to them with (if applicable) a small fee for processing and the documents will be returned to you with the State seal.
You do not have to do anything in person.
For example:
George White was born in Denver, Colorado. George sends his birth certificate to the Secretary of State’s Notary Public office in Denver requesting a Apostille for marriage documents. The birth certificate is then returned to him with the Apostille Seal on it.
